Our stories

Catherine O'Hara

Cat is from New York, USA and has been dancing for over 20 years in various dance styles and teaching dance for over 10 years.
In 2017, after “retiring” from 15 years of competitive solo dancing, she picked up partner dancing and it has slowly taken over her life. Cat brought Country Swing over from the US when she moved to Iceland in 2021 (sometimes still jumping in to teach), has previously taught Lindy Hop, and is now the primary West Coast Swing teacher in Iceland.
Though she has not forgotten her solo dance roots. Cat has choreographed for a Gríman nominated show, as well as occasionally choreographing and performing herself, or teaching solo dance classes. When you see her at a dance event (it’s not an if)
ask her to dance, she’s always up for it!

Jenna Milner

Jenna is a Master’s student studying Historical Archeology at Háskóli Íslands. She is from Canada and joined Háskóladansinn last year with no dance experience. Now that she has been part of the swing dancing scene for a year and expanding her knowledge in west coast swing, lindy hop, and country swing, she is excited to help other students find their passion for dancing and become part of a vibrant, lively community.

Ylse Anna de Vries

She is PhD student in seismology at the University of Iceland, having come over to Iceland from the Netherlands in 2022. She started dancing in early 2024 at Háskóladansinn, having never danced before. She has since learned Country Swing, Lindy Hop and WCS (and some Polka), all to varying degrees. She really enjoys the social aspect of (swing) partner dancing.
“I think we have a great community at Háskóladansinn and in the wider scene, which is why I’m happy to be in the board and helping out.”

Ida Maruotto

Ida is from Italy, and her first dance experiences include line dances and traditional dances, such as the Tarantella. During high school, she took a salsa class to avoid playing volleyball, which she was not very good at. The dance scene in her region is not very developed, so she started dancing bachata and salsa at every event she could. Until she moved to Iceland and joined Háskólaðansinn in 2024, where she learnt about partner swing dances and became part of her daily life.

Thais Trindade

She is a Brazilian who has always been in love with dancing. She started dancing samba and forró at an early age. She has also tried ballet, flamenco, belly-dance and K-pop as a pastime. She has been in Iceland since 2022, joined HD as a member in 2023 and has been a committee member since 2024.
